Kenya pushes large scale irrigation amid driving food insecurity

TANA RIVER, Kenya, Dec, 19, 2025-As drought continues to affect several counties countrywide, the Government is intensifying investment in large-scale irrigation projects to boost food production and strengthen national food security.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday toured the Galana/Kulalu Irrigation Scheme in Tana River County, where he underscored the importance of modern farming in combating hunger.

Kagwe noted that 80 percent of Kenya’s land lies in arid and semi-arid regions, stressing that irrigation farming could play a transformative role in reducing the impact of famine and climate shocks.

“The Galana/Kulalu project, covering about 1.5 million acres, has the potential to produce sufficient food not only for local consumption but also for export,” Kagwe said during the visit.

He urged investors in the scheme to adopt modern technologies and innovative farming methods to maximise yields and ensure sustainability. The Galana/Kulalu project, situated along the Galana River, is one of Kenya’s flagship food security initiatives.

It aims to transform semi-arid land into a productive hub for maize, horticulture, and livestock, while creating jobs and reducing reliance on imports.
