Mombasa County-Dec 29, 2025- The Changamwe community in Mombasa County has urged both the county and national governments to formally recognise them, citing a lack of acknowledgment compared to other communities in the country.
Speaking during the Wachangamwe Cultural Festival at Ahmed Shahame TVET institute in Port Reitz, Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi expressed regret that his community is not recognised as a minority group in Kenya. “It is a matter of concern that the Changamwe community continues to be overlooked in national discourse despite our contributions,” Mwinyi said.
Echoing the call for unity, Sports, Youth Affairs, and Creative Economy Cabinet Secretary, Salim Mvurya encouraged the community to work collaboratively with other groups to advance national development, rather than being divided along political lines.
Similarly, Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir emphasized the importance of cooperation and harmony among all communities as essential for Kenya’s economic growth and social cohesion.
The exhibition showcased the culture, traditions, and heritage of the Changamwe community, highlighting their historical contributions to the region while calling for greater inclusion in national policy and planning.
