BOMET, Kenya—Jan 21, 2026—Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially commissioned a newly installed Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab) at AGC Tenwek Hospital, a move expected to significantly strengthen cardiac and vascular care in Kenya.
The state-of-the-art facility will enable minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of heart and blood vessel conditions, expand access to life-saving cardiac services, and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
The Cath Lab is also expected to enhance Kenya’s capacity to deliver comprehensive heart care locally.
Speaking during a tour of the 176-bed hospital, Duale noted that AGC Tenwek Hospital is the only centre in Kenya dedicated exclusively to cardiology and the only cardiothoracic centre in East and Sub-Saharan Africa, positioning the country as a regional hub for advanced cardiac care.
The hospital has 17 operating theatres and 44 intensive care and high-dependency unit beds, and serves more than 234,000 patients, highlighting its critical role in regional healthcare delivery and the government’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
During the Bomet County visit, the Cabinet Secretary also unveiled the Bomet Health Centre Service Charter, reinforcing the Ministry of Health’s directive requiring all public and private health facilities to adopt service charters.
The initiative aims to enhance transparency, prevent overcharging, and protect patients’ rights.
The event was hosted by hospital leadership, including Benjamin Siele, Senior Executive Doctor Russel White, and Robert Lang’at
