Farewell to Craig: Amboseli loses a gentle giant elephant “Craig”

AMBOSELI Park, Kenya-Jan 3, 2025-The world has lost one of its most iconic giants. Craig, the legendary super tusker of Amboseli, passed away early Saturday morning aged 54, leaving behind a legacy of awe-inspiring presence, powerful genetics, and decades of conservation triumphs.

Born in January 1972 to the great matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig was one of the last remaining super tuskers in Africa — a rare breed of bull elephants whose tusks each weigh over 45 kilograms (100 lbs). With fewer than a handful still alive today, Craig was more than an elephant; he was a living monument to Africa’s natural heritage.

Over his long life, Craig fathered numerous calves, ensuring that his powerful bloodline, calm demeanor, and gentle character would persist across generations.

Visitors to Amboseli often marveled not only at the length and girth of his tusks, which swept the ground like ancient scrolls, but also at his tranquil and dignified presence. Photographers, tourists, and conservationists alike would pause in reverence as Craig ambled gracefully through the savannah, a living ambassador for his species.

Craig’s extraordinary survival to the age of 54 was no accident. Decades of dedicated protection by the Kenya Wildlife Service, in collaboration with local communities and conservation partners, ensured that he lived freely and safely.

Anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, and continuous monitoring allowed Craig to grow into the legendary figure he became. In 2021, he was adopted by East African Breweries Limited through the Tusker brand, reflecting his global appeal and the symbolic connection between wildlife and community stewardship.

“Craig was a gentle giant who taught us the value of patience, respect, and coexistence with nature,” said a KWS spokesperson. “His life was a testament to what collective commitment to conservation can achieve. We will honor his memory by continuing the work of protecting elephants and their habitats.”
For decades, Craig became a symbol of Amboseli’s success as a conservation hub. He reminded the world of the fragile majesty of Africa’s wildlife, the importance of protecting keystone species, and the enduring value of community-led conservation efforts.

Though he is gone, Craig’s legacy endures in the calves he fathered, the awe he inspired, and the global awareness he helped raise about the plight of elephants.
His passing is not only a moment of mourning but also a call to redouble efforts to protect the remaining super tuskers, ensuring that future generations may witness giants like him roam free across the African plains.

As Kenya and the world bid farewell to Craig, conservationists, locals, and wildlife enthusiasts alike are invited to celebrate his life, reflect on his contributions, and continue the mission he embodied: safeguarding Africa’s natural heritage, one tusker at a time.
