Gachagua denies arrest, alleges attack during Othaya church service

NYERI, County – Jan 25, 2026—Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed rumours that he was arrested during a chaotic incident at the ACK Witima Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, during Sunday’s church service.

In a statement shared on social media, Gachagua said he was evacuated to safety by his private security and has since arrived at his Wamunyoro residence.

He thanked the residents of Othaya for their assistance and appealed to his supporters, who had gathered in Othaya Town and Kiawara, to return home peacefully after his vehicles were reportedly disabled and sound systems dismantled.

Gachagua described the incident as a targeted attack, alleging that a “killer squad” backed by local police had attempted to harm him inside the church.

He condemned the alleged orchestration of the attack, attributing the act to President William Ruto, and expressed gratitude to other leaders and Kenyans who spoke out against the incident.

“God is in control and His power surpasses that of William Ruto,” Gachagua wrote, thanking the public for their support.

The chaotic service, which involved tear gas being deployed inside the church, forced congregants to flee. While rumours circulated about Gachagua’s arrest, no official police confirmation has been made regarding his detention.
