MOMBASA County-Jan 13, 2026- The government has officially launched the first phase of the distribution of 3 million tonnes of affordable fertiliser to over 7 million farmers across the country, a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening the national economy.
Speaking at the ETG warehouse in Mombasa County on Tuesday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Principal Secretary Dr. Kiprono Rono, said the initiative is part of a broader plan to distribute over 12.5 million tonnes of subsidised fertiliser nationwide within the year.
The programme is designed to make farming inputs more accessible and affordable, particularly for smallholder farmers who form the backbone of the country’s agricultural sector.
Dr. Ronoh also emphasized that the ministry is taking strong measures against hoarders and unscrupulous traders who have in the past made it difficult for farmers to access fertilisers at reasonable prices. “We are committed to ensuring that every bag reaches the intended beneficiaries on time and at the right price,” he said.
In addition, Dr. Ronoh urged county governments and key stakeholders in the agricultural sector to collaborate closely to ensure that farmers fully benefit from the initiative.
He stressed that successful implementation of the programme requires coordinated efforts between national and county authorities, private sector partners, and farmer groups.
Agriculture experts say that increasing access to affordable fertilisers is expected to boost crop yields, improve food security, and contribute to the growth of the national economy.
The government initiative comes amid efforts to stabilise agricultural input costs and enhance productivity in key staple crops such as maize, wheat, and horticultural products.
