KMTC Voi gets 580-bed hostel under Affordable Housing Project

TAITA TAVETA County—Feb 5, 2026—The official handover of the construction site for a modern 580-bed hostel at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Voi Campus has marked a major milestone in strengthening medical training infrastructure under the Affordable Housing Project.

The KSh206 million project reflects strong collaboration between the National Government, the County Government, and local leaders, aimed at improving healthcare training and expanding education infrastructure through joint investment.

Speaking during the site handover ceremony, Taita Taveta Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo reaffirmed the county’s close partnership with the National Government, noting that collaboration with President William Ruto’s administration remains key to delivering impactful development projects.

“This hostel, once complete, will provide safe, modern, and conducive accommodation for trainees, ultimately boosting enrollment and enhancing the quality of health professional training in the county and beyond,” said Kilalo.

She noted that the county has already strengthened the KMTC Voi Campus by deploying health professionals as lecturers, a move that has nearly doubled student enrollment from 423 to 958.

Kilalo, who is also the Acting County Health Services Executive Committee Member, said the expansion forms part of broader efforts to build and sustain a strong local healthcare workforce.

She further acknowledged the role played by the county’s first governor, Eng. John Mruttu, who allocated land for the establishment of the KMTC campus, laying the foundation for medical training in the region.

Voi Member of Parliament Khamis Chome praised the National Government and President William Ruto for advancing development in Voi through the Affordable Housing Project.

He urged the contractor to prioritise local youth and suppliers to ensure the surrounding community directly benefits from the project.

Housing County Director, Peter Kinyua said the project will also promote skills development among young people working on site through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) programme.

“We are going to empower our youth through the PLAR programme by the National Housing

Corporation and the National Industrial Training Authority, which formally recognises competencies gained outside traditional education and equips young people with nationally recognised credentials,” said Kinyua.

KMTC Voi Principal Josphine Nzesya said the institution’s rapid growth is already boosting the local economy, with increased student enrollment driving demand for housing, goods, and services. She added that the new hostel will further support the campus’s expansion.

The one-year project, awarded to Patience Services Limited, will comprise 145 rooms and essential amenities including a borehole, mini-market, shops, laundry facilities, and lifts to enhance student convenience and accessibility.

The KMTC Voi hostel project underscores how coordinated leadership and collaboration between national, county, and local authorities can strengthen education, healthcare delivery, and economic growth in the region.
