MOMBASA, Kenya-Dec 26, 2025—-Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) enforcement teams have intercepted a consignment of contraband cigarettes in Mombasa valued at approximately KSh. 72.2 million.
The shipment, which originated from Cambodia and was en-route to South Sudan, was tracked and monitored through a coordinated operation led by the Joint Port Control Unit (JPCU) and supported by intelligence shared by international partners, including Interpol.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered 1,083 cartons of illicit Supermatch, Dunhill, and Marlboro cigarettes. Officials noted that Supermatch is a brand typically manufactured in Uganda and Kenya, raising concerns over illegal trade practices.
KRA said the seizure underscores its ongoing efforts to combat illicit trade, protect revenue, and safeguard public health. Illicit cigarettes not only evade taxes and duties but may also contain harmful substances that pose health risks to consumers.
The operation aligns with the World Customs Organization’s 2026 theme, “Customs: Protecting Societies through Vigilance and Commitment.”
KRA urged the public and stakeholders to report suspicious trade activities through its hotlines, the iWhistle platform, or by visiting the nearest KRA offices.
