MOMBASA County- Jan 11, 2026 – Mombasa County has shut down the illegal Tudor Manyimbo dumpsite in Mvita Sub-County following sustained pressure from leaders and complaints over environmental and public health risks posed to nearby schools and residents.
Tudor Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Samir Bhaloo said the dumpsite, located at Manyimbo cemetery and bordering Busy Bee School opposite the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), had become a major health hazard, particularly to pupils and students.
Bhaloo criticised the county’s Department of Environment and Solid Waste Management for what he termed reckless dumping near learning institutions, warning that such practices endangered children and violated environmental standards.
“Why do you even dump waste in a school environment? Today we have shut down this illegal dumpsite, and we will protest to the Governor if we find garbage dumped here again,” Bhaloo said during the clean-up and closure exercise.
The MCA said the dumpsite had operated illegally for years despite repeated complaints from the school and residents. Busy Bee School Principal Dorothy Kaimuri said the dumpsite had been a nuisance to the school community for more than two and a half years, citing persistent stench and health concerns.
“We have written several letters to the county government, but nothing was done. The smell has been unbearable, and even NEMA has ignored our complaints,” Kaimuri said.
County officials said the closure of the dumpsite is part of broader waste management reforms, which include the commissioning of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to enhance waste sorting and recycling.
According to the Mombasa County Department of Environment Chief officer Hamid Shehan, under the new arrangement, waste from the Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding areas will be sorted at the MRF, recyclable materials processed locally, and residual waste transported to the Mwakirunge landfill.
“Residents and waste collectors have been warned against dumping waste at the closed site, with signposts erected and garbage collection teams notified of the new disposal arrangements.” said Shehan.
Shehan further stated that enforcement measures would be taken against anyone found illegally dumping waste at the site.
