MOMBASA County—Jan 30, 2026—Mombasa Governor Abdulswaamd Sharif Nassir has unveiled plans to revitalise the Central Business District (CBD) as part of broader efforts to strengthen the county’s tourism sector.
Speaking after a quarterly roundtable with stakeholders under the Mombasa Tourism Council, Governor Nassir emphasized the need to ensure that all parts of the county benefit from tourism growth.
“While our traditional tourism hubs have thrived, the CBD did not fully capture the December tourism boom. This is a gap we are committed to addressing,” the Governor said.
The county has allocated funds to revamp key public spaces, including Uhuru Gardens and Railways Park, restoring them as vibrant attractions for both visitors and residents.
Tendering for the projects is set to begin this week.
In tandem with these upgrades, the county government will continue efforts to improve order, safety, and cleanliness by addressing illegal hawking and street family encroachments in the CBD.
“Our vision is clear: a clean, safe, and lively CBD that works for businesses, residents, and visitors alike, ensuring tourism growth reaches every corner of Mombasa,” Governor Nassir added.
The move aligns with Mombasa’s ongoing strategy to maintain its competitive edge in Kenya’s tourism industry while creating inclusive economic opportunities across the county.
