Mombasa stadium revival gains momentum after National government deal

MOMBASA County—Feb 4, 2026—Mombasa’s long-awaited flagship stadium project has officially been revived following a breakthrough agreement between the County Government of Mombasa and the National Government, paving the way for completion by the end of the year.

Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir hosted Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru, and senior officials from Sports Kenya to operationalise a framework that will see the National Government support the completion of the Mombasa Stadium in Tononoka.

The engagement follows a successful petition by Governor Nassir to President William Ruto, which unlocked much-needed national intervention for the stalled project.

The agreement marks a major turning point for Mombasa, ending years of delays and restoring momentum to a facility widely regarded as central to the county’s sporting, cultural, and economic future.

Once completed, the stadium will serve as a key national asset as Kenya prepares to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, positioning Mombasa as a strategic venue for continental and international competitions.

Beyond AFCON, the facility is expected to boost youth talent development, expand sports tourism, create employment opportunities, and provide a modern platform for large-scale events and community engagement.

Governor Nassir reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the project, saying the stadium’s revival reflects a broader agenda to unlock stalled infrastructure, strengthen collaboration with the National Government, and invest in facilities that expand opportunities for young people.

With construction now firmly back on track, the completion of Mombasa Stadium is set to become one of the most significant infrastructure milestones for the county in recent years, symbolising Mombasa’s return to the national and continental sporting stage
