MOMBASA County—Jan 29, 2026—The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), in collaboration with various security agencies, has conducted a major operation targeting illicit alcohol, illegal cigarette trade and other narcotic substances in Mombasa County, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
The operation was led by NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr Anthony Omerikwa, who said the crackdown forms part of intensified national efforts to curb the proliferation of drugs and illegal alcohol following a directive by President William Ruto.
Speaking during the operation, Dr Omerikwa noted that the authority is implementing the President’s orders to wage a sustained war against alcohol and substance abuse, which continues to pose a serious threat to public health, security and economic productivity.
He warned that NACADA will not tolerate the sale or distribution of drugs and illicit brews, particularly near learning institutions, saying such activities put the future of young people at risk.
“We will not allow anyone to operate these illegal businesses, especially around schools and other learning facilities. Those involved should know that the law will catch up with them,” Omerikwa said.
The NACADA boss further underscored the importance of collaboration among government agencies, law enforcement officers, community leaders and members of the public in addressing the drug menace.
According to NACADA, Mombasa remains one of the regions vulnerable to drug trafficking and abuse due to its status as a major port city and transit point, with authorities in recent years stepping up surveillance and enforcement operations targeting traffickers and distributors.
The latest operation comes amid renewed government focus on dismantling drug networks, shutting down illegal alcohol dens and reducing access to narcotics, particularly among the youth.
