Ndindi Nyoro calls for fully free secondary education in Kenya

MOMBASA County—Jan 22, 2026—Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has called for the immediate implementation of fully free secondary education in Kenya, emphasizing that access to learning must be guaranteed and insulated from political influence.

Speaking at a public forum, Nyoro said, “This is about Kenya’s future. Education must be free, accessible, and protected from politics.” He stressed that every Kenyan child should have equal opportunity to attend school, regardless of socio-economic background or constituency.

To achieve this, Nyoro proposed the creation of a national secondary school education kitty to fund day secondary education across the country, including the provision of school meals.

He suggested pooling KSh10 billion from Constituency Development Funds (CDFs), another KSh10 billion from county governments through equitable share deductions, and supplementing this with funds from the National Government via the Ministry of Education.

According to Nyoro, Kenya requires approximately KSh15 billion annually to make secondary education fully free — an amount he says is achievable through better prioritisation of existing public resources.

Nyoro also warned against constituency-based education programmes, which he said risk creating disparities among learners. He advocated for a uniform national framework to ensure all students have equal access to education, regardless of region or political influence.

Kenya has made strides in education since the introduction of free primary education in 2003 and free day secondary education in 2008, but challenges persist, including tuition fees for some schools, exam-related costs, and disparities in infrastructure and learning resources.

Nyoro’s call adds to ongoing debates about education equity and funding priorities in the lead-up to Kenya’s next general elections.
