Nyali MP criticises Coast leaders, signals political shift

MOMBASA County—Feb 2, 2026—Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has launched a sharp attack on elected leaders from the Coast region, accusing them of engaging in personality-driven politics at the expense of meaningful development for residents.

Speaking during the distribution of school uniforms to secondary school students in Nyali Constituency, Ali criticised what he described as an emerging trend among Coast leaders to rally behind Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho as the region’s political kingpin, instead of articulating a clear development agenda.

Ali said it was regrettable that leaders from the region lacked a coherent vision for addressing long-standing socio-economic challenges facing Coast residents, choosing instead to advance individual and narrow political interests.

“It is embarrassing that the Coast region continues to lag behind in development while its leaders are focused on personal ambitions and the interests of a few individuals,” he said.

The Nyali MP further dismissed the idea that forming or backing a regional political party would automatically translate into development, insisting that good leadership — not ethnic or regional political formations — was the key driver of progress.

Ali’s remarks come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The former investigative journalist, who was elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in 2022, has in recent months signalled a possible exit from the ruling party.

He has been holding consultative meetings with leaders allied to the emerging opposition coalition, including Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka — moves widely interpreted as preparations for a political shift.

Ali is also eyeing the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in 2027, setting the stage for a potential showdown with Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), whose administration Ali has frequently criticised over governance and service delivery.

Mombasa County remains a stronghold of ODM, a party closely associated with Joho, who previously served two terms as Mombasa governor and is regarded as a key political powerbroker at the Coast.

However, Ali’s growing opposition posture reflects broader cracks within the ruling coalition and signals an increasingly competitive political contest in the region as succession politics begin to take shape.
