KINANGO, Kwale — Jan 17, 2026 — A young boy, Salim Masha Wanje, who was critically injured during a shooting incident along the Nyango–Kilibasi Road in Kinango Sub-County on January 14, 2026, has died.
The incident initially left two Kenya Police Service (KPS) officers and a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger dead.
According to police reports, the confrontation began when KPS officers engaged a charcoal motorcycle rider and encountered two KWS rangers. A dispute arose between the officers over livestock collected during the festive season.
During the altercation, a KWS ranger allegedly opened fire, killing one KPS officer on the spot and critically injuring another KPS officer as well as the young boy. The ranger involved later died at the scene.
Emergency response teams, including officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kinango and Taru, processed the scene, recovered firearms and ammunition, and transferred the deceased to Voi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary. Post-mortem examinations were conducted.
An inquest file (No. 1/2026) was opened, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.
Authorities continue to examine how the confrontation escalated and are appealing to the public for any information that may assist the investigation.
