Othaya church chaos sparks questions, Murkomen promises investigation

NYERI County—Jan 25, 2026—The chaotic disruption of a church service at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County on Sunday, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was present, has sparked nationwide concern and questions over police conduct.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen expressed grave concern over the incident, calling violence anywhere, and especially in a place of worship, unacceptable.

In a statement, he said he had spoken with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who assured him that investigations are underway and that perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“The police must move without fear or favour and deal decisively with the sponsors and perpetrators of this act without regard to their status in society or political affiliation,” Murkomen said, stressing the government’s commitment to upholding the tenets of democracy, including the right to lawful assembly and freedom of worship.

He urged the public in the area to remain calm as law enforcement agencies carry out their work.

Despite these assurances, many Kenyans have taken to social media to question the police presence at the church, asking under whose command officers surrounded the premises and why such a heavy-handed operation was carried out when the church had not reported any security threats.

Critics argue that the public is yet to see tangible evidence of investigations or answers regarding the events of the day and similar incidents in the past.

The incident involved tear gas being deployed inside the church, causing panic and forcing congregants to flee.

Former Deputy President Gachagua later confirmed that he was safe, alleging that a “killer squad” backed by local police had attempted to harm him and urging his supporters to remain peaceful.

The Othaya church disruption has ignited debates over police accountability, political interference, and citizen safety, with many calling for transparency and swift action to ensure such incidents are quelled.
