KINANGO, Kwale-Jan 15, 2026- The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the National Police Service have released an official account of the shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday evening along the Nyango–Kilibasi Road in Kinango Sub-County, Kwale County, leaving two officers dead and two civilians injured.
According to a police report, Vigurungani Police Station received information at about 6:10pm on January 14, 2026, from a Nyango village elder regarding a shooting incident involving officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Kinango and Taru rushed to the scene, where preliminary findings established that two KPS officers from Kilibasi Police Post had encountered two KWS rangers while engaging a charcoal motorcycle rider.
Reports indicate that a dispute arose between one KPS officer and a KWS ranger over goats allegedly collected during the festive season.
During the confrontation, the KWS ranger allegedly opened fire, killing one KPS officer on the spot and critically injuring another KPS officer alongside the motorcycle rider.
The injured victims were rushed to hospital for treatment. The KWS ranger involved in the shooting later died at the scene.
Authorities processed the scene, recovered firearms and ammunition, and transferred the bodies to Voi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted.
An inquest file No. 1/2026 has been opened, and investigations into the incident are ongoing under DCI Kinango.
