NAIROBI, Kenya — Jan 23, 2026—President William Ruto has nominated Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s widow, to serve as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi.
The nomination recognises Dr. Odinga’s long career as an educationist, civic leader, and advocate for social justice and gender equity. It will now be forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval.
Dr. Odinga began her professional journey as a teacher before becoming a prominent figure in public life and civic activism.
She has championed women’s rights, empowerment, and social justice initiatives for more than two decades, earning respect across Kenya’s political landscape.
The appointment comes amid ongoing political realignments following the passing of Raila Odinga in October 2025.
If confirmed, Dr. Odinga will represent Kenya at UNEP, where she will advance global environmental policy and help position Kenya at the forefront of international efforts to combat climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
The nomination has already sparked discussion among political observers and civil society stakeholders, with many viewing it as recognition of Dr. Odinga’s leadership legacy and her commitment to public service, while others subjecting the nomination to further political scrutiny.
