KAMPALA, Uganda—Jan 20, 2026—Uganda is on edge after the country’s army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, publicly threatened opposition leader Bobi Wine, warning that he could be killed if he does not surrender to authorities.
Muhoozi, the eldest son of President Yoweri Museveni, issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Wine to turn himself in, claiming that security forces had already killed 22 members of Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) and implying that Wine could face the same fate.
The statements, made via social media, have drawn widespread condemnation from opposition figures, human rights organisations, and international observers.
Bobi Wine, a former musician turned politician, responded by accusing security forces of raiding his residence and endangering his family. He narrowly escaped the alleged operation, though his current location remains unclear.
The threats follow the January 15 presidential election, in which President Museveni was declared the winner with a large share of the vote, while Bobi Wine officially received about 24%. The election was marred by reports of irregularities, violent crackdowns on protests, and an internet blackout.
Since the election, more than 100 opposition supporters have been charged in relation to protests, raising concerns among civil society groups about shrinking democratic space in Uganda.
Analysts warn that Muhoozi’s statements could further inflame tensions in an already volatile political climate.
International human rights organisations have condemned the threats, urging restraint and respect for due process. “Rhetoric that threatens violence against political opponents undermines democracy and risks escalating conflict,” said one rights observer.
Bobi Wine has been a leading critic of President Museveni’s long tenure, surviving multiple arrests and crackdowns in recent years.
Muhoozi’s rise to army chief and his outspoken social media presence have made him a central and polarising figure in Uganda’s political landscape.
As Uganda faces a post-election standoff, the international community continues to watch closely, calling for dialogue and peaceful resolution while warning against further escalation.
