U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau to visit Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya—Jan 25, 2026—United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has confirmed that he will visit Kenya as part of a wider diplomatic tour of Africa that begins today and runs through early February.

The visit forms part of Landau’s first major engagement on the continent since assuming office and will also take him to Egypt, Ethiopia and Djibouti. The tour is aimed at advancing U.S. diplomatic priorities, including strengthening economic partnerships, enhancing security cooperation and engaging on regional peace and stability.

While in Nairobi, Landau is expected to hold talks with senior Kenyan government officials focusing on trade and investment, counter-terrorism cooperation, and Kenya’s role in regional security initiatives in East Africa.

The discussions are expected to build on long-standing strategic ties between Nairobi and Washington. Kenya remains a key U.S. ally in the region, particularly in efforts to combat terrorism and promote economic growth. The visit is also expected to reinforce cooperation in areas such as governance, development and private sector investment.

Landau’s trip comes at a time of renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries, following the cancellation of a planned visit to Kenya by U.S. Vice President JD Vance late last year. His presence in Nairobi is seen as a signal of continued U.S. interest in deepening bilateral relations.

Christopher Landau currently serves as the second-highest ranking official at the U.S. State Department and plays a central role in shaping and implementing American foreign policy.
