Uganda election sparks EU concern despite Museveni victory

KAMPALA, Uganda — Jan 23, 2026—The European Union has raised concerns over the conduct of Uganda’s recent presidential election, even as President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of a seventh term.

The bloc highlighted reports of post-election violence, arbitrary arrests, and restrictions on civil society, urging authorities to uphold democratic norms and protect citizens’ rights.

In a statement, the EU’s External Action Service noted that while it acknowledges the official results, it remains troubled by an uneven electoral environment, including internet shutdowns and intimidation of opposition supporters.

The statement emphasized the need for restraint from all political actors and reaffirmed that continued engagement with the EU depends on respect for democratic processes.

President Museveni officially secured over 70% of the vote, prompting congratulations from international figures, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. The African Union Commission also commended the conduct of the polls, despite isolated incidents of tension and reported violence.

Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, rejected the results as “fake”, alleging ballot manipulation and heavy security presence during voting.

Human rights groups report that hundreds of opposition supporters have been detained, with some fatalities, raising concerns about political freedoms in the country.

The EU clarified that its statement does not constitute an endorsement of Museveni’s re-election, but underscores its position on credible elections and the protection of democratic norms, even as it maintains diplomatic engagement with Uganda.
