Wetangula warns half of MPs may lose seats in 2027 elections

NAIVASHA, Kenya—Jan 28, 2026 —National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula has cautioned that up to half of Kenya’s current Members of Parliament may fail to secure re-election in the 2027 general elections, citing performance and accountability concerns.

Speaking at a forum with MPs in Naivasha, Wetangula said that a review of pension records for previous parliaments revealed that at least 56 percent of former MPs did not return after completing their terms.

“This shows clearly that the electorate demands results and accountability. Those who do not perform risk losing their seats,” Wetangula said, urging lawmakers to remain responsive to their constituents.
Political observers say Wetangula’s warning reflects growing public scrutiny of elected officials.

In particular, Kenya’s young generation—often referred to as Gen-Z—is increasingly vocal on social media and in political spaces, questioning MPs’ accountability and threatening to vote out those perceived as underperforming.

Analysts note that this demographic shift is shaping the political landscape, putting pressure on incumbents to deliver tangible results, from development projects to active representation in parliament. Failure to meet these expectations could reshape the composition of the National Assembly in 2027.

With tensions already rising ahead of the next general election, Wetangula’s remarks underscore the importance of performance and engagement by lawmakers, highlighting that voter expectations are higher than ever before.
