Worship turns chaotic, police disperse opposition leaders

OTHAYA, Nyeri County — Jan 25, 2026—A Sunday church service at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County was disrupted after police moved in to disperse opposition leaders who had attended the service, triggering chaos among congregants.

Witnesses said the incident occurred mid-service when security officers fired tear gas near the church compound, forcing worshippers to flee as clouds of smoke engulfed the area. The service was abruptly halted as congregants, including women and children, rushed to safety.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was present during the service, claimed the incident amounted to an attack on worshippers. He alleged that security forces used excessive force, including tear gas, and that several vehicles linked to his convoy were damaged during the confrontation.

Video clips circulating online showed worshippers coughing, running for cover and seeking refuge outside the church as the situation escalated. Clergy members were seen attempting to calm the congregation as panic spread.

At the time of publication, police had not issued an official statement explaining the reasons for the operation or the use of force at a place of worship. The incident comes amid heightened political tensions between the government and opposition leaders, who have repeatedly accused security agencies of intimidation and suppression of political activities.

In recent months, opposition figures have reported disruptions of public gatherings, including meetings held in churches and community spaces.
Churches have increasingly become venues for political engagement, particularly in central Kenya, where leaders often attend services to interact with supporters.

The use of tear gas within or near a church compound has raised concerns among religious leaders and civil society groups about respect for freedom of worship and the neutrality of sacred spaces.
The Sunday’s events in Othaya are likely to intensify calls for restraint by security agencies and renewed dialogue to ease political tensions in the country.
